Job Description



Linguistics/Anthropology Interns

As a student intern you will be a part of a team that creates interactive content in our award-winning game-based system that teaches foreign languages and cultures. There are several languages being developed, but specific knowledge of these is less important than your passion for learning new ones. As a content developer, you will author lessons that teach foreign languages in a fun and engaging way, using our task-based pedagogy and cultural lens framework. As a linguist, you will also assist in the construction and maintenance of language models (lexicon, dictionary, morphology, syntactic rules). The models will be used to produce software to automatically process foreign language speech. Part of your duties may include the construction of an annotated speech database which will be used to improve our speech recognizer.

We take internships seriously, and see them as a step to get to know you and you get to know us. We have hired many of our interns in the past. You will have a chance to do real work and see it be part of our delivered systems and courses. In turn, we will require commitment from you. You will need to be able to work at least 16 hours a week on average, and ideally 20 hours a week.

You will be a student who:

  • Possesses a solid knowledge of linguistics
  • Is not only capable of learning languages but has a passion for language and language learning
  • Has outstanding writing skills
  • Is comfortable w/computers and tech savvy
  • Is creative
  • Is organized and detail-oriented
  • Is an excellent communicator
  • Is a team player and a problem solver
  • Is analytical by nature and can look at data this way

Minimum Education:

Working toward a Bachelor's Degree in linguistics.

Desired education and experience:

  • Experience building syntactic models of languages (lexicons, dictionaries, morphological models, etc.).
  • Experience with phonetic, and different phonetic labeling schemes (preferably had some courses on phonetics).
  • Experience authoring language and culture courses.
  • Experience in NLP (Natural Language Processing).
  • Linguistics-level knowledge of the following languages is a plus: English, French, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Chinese, Farsi, Bahasa.
